"The Bunge & Born Foundation Prize - 2001" goes to Archaeologists


As every year since 1964, next August the The Bunge & Born Foundation will offer its research award, one of the most prestigious in the world of Argentine Science.
This is the first time it is offered to the topic of Archaeology. Licenciado Carlos Aschero will receive the senior award for renowned research and Doctor Irina Podgorny, will be the first person to receive it in the new category "Stímulus for Young Scientists".
Carlos Aschero, 54 years old, is Director of the Anthropology Museum at the Instituto Lillo of the University of Tucumán and is a senior full professor at the same university in the province of Tucumán. He currently conducts scientific research in two regions of Argentina: the Puna and Patagonia. His seminal studies on lithic materials have become a major reference source. Equally important are the new perspective he brought to understanding and explaining prehistoric rock art, as well as his scholarly contribution to training new generations by teaching courses and offering graduate and post-graduate lectures both in Argentina and universities abroad.

The Selection Committee for the Archaeology Prize 2001 included doctors Alberto Rex González, Carlos Gradin and Juan Schobinger from Argentina; Fernanda Falabella from Chile; Pedro Funari from Brazil; Danielle Lavallée from France and Tom Dillehay from the USA.
The Special Advisory Committee included prestigious researchers from Argentina, Brazil and Chile and was chaired by Luis Abel Orquera.
The last time The Bunge & Born Foundation Prize was given (In the year 2000) the honor was bestowed on a Molecular Biologist: Dr. Héctor Torres.
